Our Wider Curriculum
Wider Curriculum – Intent and Implementation
Hardwick Primary School
At Hardwick Primary School, we are committed to providing an ambitious, inclusive and engaging curriculum that enables every child to belong, thrive and achieve. Our wider curriculum plays a vital role in developing confident, curious and well-rounded learners, equipping them with the knowledge, skills and values they need for life in modern Britain and beyond.
Our curriculum is knowledge-rich, carefully sequenced and progressive. It is designed to spark curiosity, deepen understanding and build skills over time, ensuring that children can make meaningful connections in their learning. Alongside strong academic outcomes, we place great importance on pupils’ personal development, wellbeing and readiness for the next stage of their education.
Children at Hardwick benefit from a broad and balanced curriculum, enriched by high-quality resources, purposeful experiences and opportunities that make learning memorable and meaningful. Our aim is for every child to leave Hardwick not only with strong foundational knowledge, but also with the confidence, independence and social understanding needed to flourish.
Use of Kapow Primary
To support the delivery of our wider curriculum, Hardwick Primary School uses Kapow Primary for Computing, Religious Education, PSHE & RSE, and French.
Kapow Primary provides a well-structured, high-quality curriculum that aligns closely with national expectations and statutory guidance. Each subject is carefully sequenced to ensure clear progression in both knowledge and skills from EYFS to Year 6. Lessons are engaging, accessible and inclusive, enabling all pupils to achieve success while also providing appropriate challenge.
Kapow supports our teachers by providing:
-
clear subject intent and progression
-
strong subject knowledge and guidance
-
high-quality lesson resources and assessment opportunities
-
consistency and coherence across year groups
This ensures that teaching is confident, consistent and effective, while still allowing staff the flexibility to adapt lessons to meet the needs of our children.
As a result of our wider curriculum:
-
pupils develop strong subject knowledge and transferable skills
-
children show enthusiasm, curiosity and confidence in their learning
-
pupils are well prepared for the next stage of their education
-
personal development, wellbeing and understanding of the wider world are strengthened
Our curriculum supports children to grow academically, socially and emotionally, ensuring they leave Hardwick Primary School ready to meet future challenges with resilience, respect and aspiration.
Use of Charanga
At Hardwick Primary School, we use Charanga Musical School to support the teaching of music across the school. Charanga provides a well structured and engaging music curriculum that helps children to develop their skills in singing, listening, playing instruments, composing and performing. Lessons are carefully sequenced so that children build their musical knowledge and confidence over time. Charanga supports our teachers with high quality resources and guidance, ensuring that all pupils enjoy inclusive and inspiring music lessons that foster creativity, enjoyment and a lifelong appreciation of music.
Please see our Curriculum Overviews below for further detail on the curriculum content of these areas
Religious Education at Hardwick
Our curriculum reflects the Oxfordshire Syllabus for RE and is supported by our Kapow planning resources. Our curriculum has been designed:
1. For pupils to learn about religions and beliefs which have influenced the lives of millions of people and heavily influenced the development of different human cultures. Pupils apply academic skills such as analysis and critical and creative thinking, approaching the study of religion with different disciplines as they move through the school.
2. For pupils to recognise and develop their own perspective from their increasingly academic and creative exploration of religions and other worldviews
The right of withdrawal: Hardwick Primary School recognises that under the current legislation (School Standards and Framework Act 1998 s71, as amended), a parent may request that their child may be wholly or partly excused from receiving RE given at the school in accordance with the school's basic curriculum, and if so, the pupil shall be excused until the request is withdrawn. We also recognise the right to provision of alternative forms of RE under current legislation.
