Year 5

Summer 2 Curriculum Newsletter
Year 5

Welcome!

Welcome to our final term in Attenborough class!  Please find below the areas of study for this term, as well as a few key expectations and general information.

Uniform and water bottles

Please make sure your child is wearing the correct school uniform and that it is clearly labelled to avoid confusion. Uniform guidelines are outlined on the school website – please contact the school office if you have any questions. All children should bring a labelled water bottle to school every day. A hydrated body means a higher functioning mind.

PE

Our usual PE days this term are Tuesday (Dance) and Thursday (Athletics). Please can your child bring suitable PE kit to school on Monday and they can be taken home on a Friday.  This must include a suitable pair of trainers. PE kits can stay in class and will be sent home to be washed after the last PE lesson of the week. Children will need tracksuit bottoms and/or shorts, a plain t-shirt in their house colour and a spare jumper for colder days. Children will also need a suitable pair of trainers. Earrings must be removed or covered for PE.

Homework

Children will have one homework book which will be used for all homework. If you have any queries about homework, please do not hesitate to come and speak to a member of the Year 5 team..

Times Table Rock Stars

For their maths homework, children must complete at least 20 games (or 20 minutes) across a week in garage mode on Times Table Rock Stars.

Reading

All children have a reading diary, which they should bring to school in their book bag every day. Please encourage your child to record their reading (as well as any additional comments) in the reading diary including the date and, where appropriate, page numbers. We will check the reading diary every Friday. The expectation is that children should be reading daily.

Topic Homework Menus

Children will have a termly topic homework menu with homework options based on our STEAM curriculum. All children should complete at least one piece of homework that is based on our STEAM topic each term. STEAM homework will be celebrated at our STEAM showcase at the end of term as well as the children being able to share it with their peers in class. Dojos will be awarded for creativity.

Spelling

Every Friday, the children will be given a weekly list of spellings to practice. These will follow the same spelling rule that we have learned in class that week. Spellings will be tested the following Friday and a new set will be given out.

Curriculum

STEAM

This term our STEAM focus is performing arts.

We will create an art gallery honouring each child’s culture and ancestors inspired by Central American artists/artwork and create a recording of children performing a piece of music inspired by the festival Día de los Muertos.

Throughout our learning journey we will:

  • Explore what Día de los Muertos is and where it is celebrated
  • Compare the geographical features of Central American countries
  • Explore and learn a Central American song
  • Compose a musical sequence to accompany our chosen song
  • Explore a range of artwork associated with Día de los Muertos
  • Explore Frida Kahlo’s artwork and symbolism
  • Create our own artwork inspired by the examples we have seen

Maths

Our topics this half term will be:

Music

As part of our STEAM unit, we will create a recording of children performing a piece of music inspired by the festival Día de los Muertos.

We will:

  • Talk about musical characteristics that give a song its style

As always, thank you for your continued support – we are looking forward to an exciting term ahead and partnering with you in your child’s learning and development. If you do have any questions or concerns, please do get in touch.
